I found out my thesis proposal for my BA was officially approved, so I’ll be trying to get as much done in the few months before we leave for Amsterdam and the FIS begins. ‘Thesis’ isn’t really the right word-it’s not a research paper. It’s more like a ‘creative project’-a collection of personal essays reflecting on my experience in missions over the past eight years. I think I’m really going to enjoy it. The tentative title is Following Christ Across Cultures: Reflections on Faith, Culture, and Mission. I might have to revise that later, but I’m pretty happy with how broad it is. I’m supposed to be putting in 50 hours a week of reading and writing. The writing part is definitely the more challenging side of the project. I feel like I have plenty of ideas of what to write about, but actually putting them into coherent and readable essays is another story. The reading, of course, is the fun part (the guy in the picture above is obviously having the time of his life). I get to revisit some books that have influenced me in the past few years, and read a bunch of books that I’ve been looking forward to reading. Here’s my working bibliography (for the one or two of you out there who are actually interested-feel free to offer suggestions if you think something is missing):

Hey Chris, sounds like you guys have been busy and had some fun adventures lately! I was just checking blogs recently and saw your book list. Ambitious! But a great list. It’s funny, when I first saw this Soong Chah Rah’s book came to mind, and then I kept reading and there it was on your projected list! I’ve heard him speak quite a few times now and learned a lot, but then again I am drawn to books and speakers like that as it’s so relevant to my work. If you’re familiar with CCDA (Christian Community Dev’t Association), I’d recommend any of the books on their lists. Also, there is one I’ve been meaning to read called “Jesus Wants to Save Christians” by Rob Bell and Don Golden. I haven’t read any of Rob Bell’s any other stuff, but Don Golden is at World Relief, and I’ve really appreciated and respected his experience and thinking on the church and mission.
Anyway, happy reading and best of luck on your thesis!
Hi Tara,
Nice to hear from you! I will definitely check out the CCDA list. I read ‘Velvet Elvis’ by Rob Bell and thought it was such a good book so I’m sure JWTSC is great as well.
I just finished Soong Chah Rah’s book and really enjoyed it (although, being a white middle class American it’s not exactly an easy message to hear-but true i think).
Have you heard of Eric Law’s book “The Wolf Shall Dwell With the Lamb: A Spirituality for Leadership in a Multicultural Community” ? I think you would really appreciate if you haven’t. I think it’s one of the most practical books I’ve come across about intercultural relationships.
all the best and thanks for the recommendations!
Hey, Chris- I haven’t heard of the Eric Law book, but will check it out, thanks! I agree about SCR’s book and also speaking - can be hard to read/hear and actually some of the tone I am not so sure about it. Happy belated Thanksgiving to you all!
